Buxar: The police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a youth named Chotu Baba and his associates for creating a commotion during the retrieval of a drowned man at the main canal bridge near Jyoti Prakash Chowk in the city. The accused are charged with misbehaving with a female police officer, obstructing government duty, scuffling with police personnel, and attempting to stop the District Magistrate’s (DM) official vehicle. Following the emergence of a video of the incident on social media, the police have launched a manhunt to identify and arrest the suspects.
The Incident
According to the police, they received information around 4:00 PM on September 3 that a 40-year-old man had jumped into the canal near Jyoti Prakash Chowk. The police promptly reached the spot, where a large crowd had already gathered. During this time, four to five youths arrived in a four-wheeler. Bystanders were addressing one of these youths as “Chotu Baba.”
Dispute During the Rescue Operation
As per the police complaint, the youths started causing a disruption while the search and rescue operation for the drowning man was underway. It is alleged that their noise and interference obstructed official duties. Shortly afterward, government divers arrived at the scene and pulled the man out of the canal.
The police allege that once the man was brought out, the youths loaded him into their vehicle and sped away. Although the police pursued them, the youths managed to escape. It was later discovered that the man was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Social Media Video as Key Evidence
The police are treating a video circulating on social media as a crucial piece of evidence. The official complaint notes that in a video posted from an Instagram account, two youths are seen arguing with a female police officer near Jyoti Prakash Chowk and disrupting official proceedings. The footage also shows several other individuals accompanying them.
Furthermore, the police stated that during the chaos, the youths attempted to stop the DM’s official vehicle and create a further ruckus. When the police force tried to remove the youths from the area, the situation escalated into a physical scuffle, compelling the police to use force to disperse the crowd.
Raids Intensified Following the FIR
An FIR has been lodged at the Town (Nagar) Police Station based on a formal complaint by Assistant Sub-Inspector Mukesh Kumar Yadav. Town Station House Officer (SHO) Manoj Kumar Singh confirmed that the investigation has been assigned to officer Kanchan Bala. Utilizing the video and other available evidence, the police are currently identifying the accused and conducting raids at potential hideouts to secure their arrests.
